What happened from your point of view?
I never removed a page. I handled only the closed folio for the intake photograph.
What detail should I check independently?
The page stubs have old, darkened edges, not a fresh tear.
HARD · CASE FILE
Hard · A private folio viewing
A valuable folio is said to have lost a leaf during a viewing. The owner blames a reader and asks for an insurance payment. First establish whether there was a new loss at all.
Read the case file below, or open the interactive desk to examine records, keep notes and submit your reasoning. These are the case materials, without the solution.
The intake seal and continuous viewing record survive. The conservator’s earlier condition report is signed and independently dated. Every deduction can be made from those records without specialist paper knowledge.

The policy excludes losses that predate cover. Vera received that condition before today’s report.
A photograph described as “complete” may show only the outside of a closed volume.
Viewing attendant
No viewer opened the folio before it was placed under its fixed camera.
The camera and intake seal have an unbroken sequence.
Private folio owner
A reader stole leaf seven from my complete folio during today’s viewing. I want its full insured value.
My catalogue photograph was taken before the viewers arrived.
Conservator
I inspected the folio last month and recorded an old missing leaf.
The signed condition report identifies the old stub at position seven.
Read each record on its own terms. A claim made by a person is different from a fact established by an independent record.
Physical record · Intake table
The folio arrives with the same missing stub. No page is detached or removed during its unbroken opening sequence. Jo’s first handling is of the closed cover.
Physical record · Insurance desk
Before the viewing Vera writes to her assistant: “The old absent seventh leaf must be reported as lost today; the policy will not pay for its old condition.” The assistant refuses and preserves the message.
Physical record · Insurance desk
Vera acknowledges the exclusion of pre-existing missing leaves before buying the policy. Its receipt predates today’s new-theft report.
Physical record · Condition archive
Jo booked to inspect script style and was not told a leaf was absent. The booking does not support an agreement with the owner.
Physical record · Intake table
The photograph shows the closed exterior. It cannot contradict an earlier record of a missing internal leaf.
Physical record · Intake table
The missing position and darkened stub match the earlier condition images. No additional page loss or new tear is found.

Rafi’s log links the incoming folio continuously to the camera opening and the current examination, with no private interval for another substitution.
Physical record · Condition archive
Hugo’s independently dated report records leaf seven absent a month before the viewing. The illustrated darkened stub matches the current folio.
