The Detective’s Desk

HARD · CASE FILE

The first cold enough shipment

Hard · GLASSHOUSE COLD ROOM

A sample cools in a controlled room, then travels in an insulated carrier that preserves its departure temperature. Dispatching too early cannot be fixed during transit. The archive retained the competing reconstructions in separate packets. Rebuild their custody events, identify the proposal supported by the analytical records, then name that packet’s recorded handler. The packet events form a separate ordered register; do not substitute a calculated clock time for a review-slot label.

Investigate this case

Read the case file below, or open the interactive desk to examine records, keep notes and submit your reasoning. These are the case materials, without the solution.

Your assignment

Who handled the packet containing the supported reconstruction?

People and accounts

Lena Ford

Recorded packet handler

“Establish my packet, location and event from the verified custody record.”

Tavi Cole

Recorded packet handler

“Establish my packet, location and event from the verified custody record.”

Pera Dean

Recorded packet handler

“Establish my packet, location and event from the verified custody record.”

Oren Bell

Recorded packet handler

“Establish my packet, location and event from the verified custody record.”

Inez Shore

Recorded packet handler

“Establish my packet, location and event from the verified custody record.”

Oren Lake

Recorded packet handler

“Establish my packet, location and event from the verified custody record.”

Case records

Read each record on its own terms. A claim made by a person is different from a fact established by an independent record.

VERIFIED RECORD C

Transport certificate

Transport takes exactly 20 minutes. The carrier keeps temperature constant from departure to arrival; no further cooling occurs in transit.

Add travel after the sample reaches the departure threshold.

CONTEXT NOTE

Sample case

The carrier is silver. Its thermal behaviour is fully described in the certificate.

This describes the setting; it does not establish the requested result.

VERIFIED RECORD A

Cooling observations

The sample is 20°C at 08:00 and 14°C at 08:30. It cools at that same constant rate while in the room until dispatched.

Calculate the cooling rate and when the threshold is reached.

VERIFIED RECORD B

Handling standard

The sample must be at or below 8°C when dispatched. Equality is allowed. It may not leave earlier.

Find the earliest legal departure, not merely an eventual cold reading.

RECONSTRUCTION RECORD

Packet proposal index

This is the same investigation’s packet custody record. There are 6 ordered events, labelled Review 1, Review 2, Review 3, Review 4, Review 5, Review 6. Each listed person, location and item occurs exactly once. These slots describe record order, not times from the analytical problem. Each packet contains the proposed reconstruction shown in the index. Solve the original three analytical records to identify the supported proposal, then trace its packet to its handler. Control packets have no proposal and cannot be the target.

  • The event handled by Oren Lake occupies slot 5 (Review 5).
  • The event at Intake counter occurs immediately before the event at Seal station (consecutive rows, with no event between them).
  • The event involving “Packet Birch” occurs earlier than the event handled by Pera Dean, without claiming they are consecutive.
  • The event at Reading desk occurs immediately before the event handled by Oren Lake (consecutive rows, with no event between them).
  • The event involving “Packet Birch” and the event involving “Packet Dune” are exactly 4 positions apart, with 3 intervening events; this alone gives no direction.

Use each column’s choices exactly once. Verified relationships govern the board; proposed answers and later recollections do not override them.

RECONSTRUCTION RECORD

Custody sequence

The relationships below were verified independently. “A immediately before B” means A is in the row directly above B, with no row between them. Keep relationships from all worksheet sources together.

  • The event at Audit desk occupies slot 5 (Review 5).
  • The event handled by Lena Ford occurs earlier than the event involving “Packet Birch”, without claiming they are consecutive.
  • The event at Intake counter occurs immediately before the event handled by Inez Shore (consecutive rows, with no event between them).
  • The event handled by Oren Lake and the event at Review bench are exactly 2 positions apart, with 1 intervening event; this alone gives no direction.
  • The event handled by Oren Bell and the event handled by Inez Shore are exactly 2 positions apart, with 1 intervening event; this alone gives no direction.

Use each column’s choices exactly once. Verified relationships govern the board; proposed answers and later recollections do not override them.

RECONSTRUCTION RECORD

Cross-check and accounts

The relationships below were verified independently. “A immediately before B” means A is in the row directly above B, with no row between them. Keep relationships from all worksheet sources together. The following later recollections are claims to test, NOT verified facts. Exactly one disagrees with the reconstructed board; this alone is not proof of deliberate deception.

  • The event at Intake counter and the event involving “Packet Fern” are exactly 2 positions apart, with 1 intervening event; this alone gives no direction.
  • The event involving “Packet Elm” occurs earlier than the event involving “Packet Cedar”, without claiming they are consecutive.
  • The event at Audit desk occurs immediately before the event involving “Packet Amber” (consecutive rows, with no event between them).
  • The event at Seal station occurs earlier than the event handled by Tavi Cole, without claiming they are consecutive.

Use each column’s choices exactly once. Verified relationships govern the board; proposed answers and later recollections do not override them.

Questions to resolve

What is the earliest permitted arrival time?

Match every recorded item to its handler or reviewer.

At which location was the target packet handled?

Use the interactive case desk to select your finding and cite the records that support it. The answer is checked there, and your progress stays in your browser.

Build your finding

Compare the records with each account. Work out what the evidence establishes, then separate that finding from anything it does not prove.
