PEN & PAPER · CASE FILE
The Auction That Never Had the Map
Pen & Paper · A disputed rare-map auction
The winning bidder receives a reproduction, but every photograph seems to show the right design. The key question may be whether the original was ever in the public auction. Follow provenance, handling and a private return folder.
Investigate this case
Read the case file below, or open the interactive desk to examine records, keep notes and submit your reasoning. These are the case materials, without the solution.
The scene
The auction-room exits are secured when the complaint is made. The original’s crescent repair is independently documented before unpacking. An outward-facing design photograph cannot establish the identity of a physical sheet.
People and accounts
Rose Venn
Auctioneer
Where were you when it happened?
The map stayed on the preview table until the auction closed. The winner took the documented lot.
What connects you to this case?
The seller discovered that I had arranged an unauthorised private sale of the same map.
What did you see or hear that others might have missed?
Return folders are not checked as auction lots.
Ilya Vale
Registered bidder
Where were you when it happened?
I won the lot and opened the package only after the room closed. I was as surprised as anyone to find a print.
What connects you to this case?
Rose had promised me a consulting fee for helping a private client.
What did you see or hear that others might have missed?
I collected a return folder from Rose before the public preview.
Celia Orr
Map conservator
Where were you when it happened?
I authenticated the original at 09:00. A crescent repair crosses its watermark, visible only against transmitted light.
What connects you to this case?
The owner had ignored my conservation advice.
What did you see or hear that others might have missed?
The framed preview photograph does not show the transmitted-light test.
Nell Dane
Losing bidder
Where were you when it happened?
I inspected the public preview but did not handle the map.
What connects you to this case?
I wanted it badly and accused Ilya of driving up the price.
What did you see or hear that others might have missed?
A table image can show the same printed design without showing the physical original.
Tomas Shaw
Seller’s representative
Where were you when it happened?
I stayed at the registration desk during the 09:20–09:35 unpacking.
What connects you to this case?
The seller owed me commission. I wanted the sale completed legitimately.
What did you see or hear that others might have missed?
The owner’s instructions forbid private disposal before auction.
Arun Hart
Packing clerk
Where were you when it happened?
I received a flat map from Rose at 09:32 and wrapped it on the desk camera.
What connects you to this case?
I was paid by the hour. I did not know about her private sale.
What did you see or hear that others might have missed?
I sealed the material I was handed; I did not authenticate it.
Case records
Read each record on its own terms. A claim made by a person is different from a fact established by an independent record.
Physical record · Unpacking desk
Unpacking camera
Rose alone removes the original from its signed transit wrapper at 09:24. At 09:28 she puts a sheet into a return folder. At 09:32 she hands a different sheet to Arun. No other person handles either sheet in between.
Physical record · Preview table
Public handling record
Tomas stays at registration, Nell remains behind the preview barrier, Celia has returned her inspection tools, and Arun receives the already substituted sheet. None has the original after Rose’s unpacking.
Physical record · Unpacking desk
Transmitted-light authentication
Celia’s 09:00 test shows the crescent repair crossing the original watermark. The sheet later delivered to Ilya lacks both the watermark and repair and is a modern reproduction.
Physical record · Unpacking desk
The conservator’s wrapper serial
The serial on Rose’s removed wrapper matches Celia’s authenticated original. It closes the chain between the morning test and the unpacking camera.
Physical record · Preview table
Preview photograph
The photograph records only the map design from above. Its resolution and lighting cannot show a watermark or repair. It does not contradict a substitution before the public preview.
Physical record · Preview table
Packing camera
Arun wraps the sheet Rose supplies, continuously in view. The same package reaches the auction. He never has a second sheet with which to replace it.
Physical record · Return shelves
The recovered return folder
A folder collected by Ilya before preview contains the chart with the crescent repair and watermark. It was hidden under ordinary returned correspondence, not placed with purchased lots.
Physical record · Registration desk
Seller’s mandate
The seller authorises a public auction only. Rose’s proposed private sale is explicitly rejected in a dated reply received before 09:24.
Physical record · Registration desk
Private-sale agreement
Before the auction Rose agrees to deliver the authenticated original to a private buyer through Ilya. His signed consulting fee is contingent on the original leaving in a return folder.
Physical record · Return shelves
The consulting invoice
Ilya’s draft invoice says “original in returns, not the auction reproduction”. It predates his claim that he discovered the substitution only after winning.
Questions to resolve
Who substituted the physical sheet before preview?
Who knowingly used the return folder to move the original?
When had the public lot already become a reproduction?
What independently identifies the original?
