The Wrong Seat at the Hearing

Pen & Paper · A private settlement conference

Julian dies after moving into a mediator’s chair. A borrowed badge seems important, and a voice recording appears to locate everyone. Establish the source of the contaminated object, its intended recipient and whether the clerk’s errand was knowing assistance.

Investigate this case

Read the case file below, or open the interactive desk to examine records, keep notes and submit your reasoning. These are the case materials, without the solution.

The scene

The common water is clean. The only harmful residue is on the inside of the pine-crested gift cup at Veda’s place. Julian’s own blue-ring cup remains untouched. The examination confirms deliberate contamination before the session, not a reaction produced by the seat change.

People and accounts

Arun Quinn

Junior clerk

Where were you when it happened?

I borrowed Ron’s badge to collect copies from an outer office. I did not enter the meeting room with it.

What connects you to this case?

I wanted a good reference from Ron.

What did you see or hear that others might have missed?

The copying request named papers, not a cup or any interference with a drink.

Ron Lake

Settlement solicitor

Where were you when it happened?

I gave Veda an unopened commemorative cup. I did not know Julian would use her place.

What connects you to this case?

Veda misunderstood my authority to sign the settlement. The inquiry would have been damaging.

What did you see or hear that others might have missed?

I later lent Arun my access badge for ordinary document copying.

Esme Dane

Remote stenographer

Where were you when it happened?

I was at the separate recording desk. A speakerphone feed captured voices, not seating positions.

What connects you to this case?

I had corrected Ron’s settlement wording and he resented that.

What did you see or hear that others might have missed?

The audio alone cannot tell whose cup Julian used.

Milo Bell

Conference attendant

Where were you when it happened?

I supplied ordinary sealed water cups, including Julian’s blue-ring cup. I never supplied the pine-crested gift cup.

What connects you to this case?

The organiser owed our venue money.

What did you see or hear that others might have missed?

Ron carried the gift in a tied case and asked staff not to wash it.

Nia Shore

Witness advocate

Where were you when it happened?

I sat beside Julian. He took Veda’s place to read the settlement pages and drank from the cup already there.

What connects you to this case?

I disagreed with his strategy, but wanted his evidence heard.

What did you see or hear that others might have missed?

The cup had a small pine-tree crest, not Julian’s blue-ring mark.

Veda Cole

Dispute mediator

Where were you when it happened?

I chaired the preliminary session, then left the room for a documented call. Julian took my seat while I was out.

What connects you to this case?

I intended to expose Ron’s forged settlement authority. Julian was supporting that inquiry.

What did you see or hear that others might have missed?

The personalised cup at my place was a gift Ron had insisted I use.

Case records

Read each record on its own terms. A claim made by a person is different from a fact established by an independent record.

Physical record · Gift-case desk

Maker’s retained seal photograph

The maker’s high-resolution seal image confirms that the lower shrink seal was intact when Ron collected it. A replacement tie cannot restore that state.

Physical record · Gift-case desk

Gift-case chain of custody

The maker’s departure image shows the gift cup clean and shrink-sealed. Ron alone holds it between collection and the hearing. The arrival image shows the seal cut beneath a fresh tie before he gives it to Veda.

Physical record · Hearing room

Room wide-angle record

Veda leaves for a verified call. Julian moves into her place, reads the settlement pages and uses the pine-crested cup. Nobody exchanges the two cups afterward.

Physical record · Recording desk

Settlement authority audit

Veda’s preserved inquiry identifies Ron’s forged authority and a diverted settlement payment. Julian’s supporting witness statement would confirm it.

Physical record · Copy office

Clerk’s copying instruction

Ron’s signed request asks Arun only to retrieve duplicates from the outer office. The badge record and copy camera confirm that route without entering the hearing room.

Physical record · Hearing room

Veda’s call and seating note

The call was requested by a third party during the session. Julian’s seat change was spontaneous on the room recording, after the gift was delivered.

Physical record · Copy office

Badge and gift timeline

The gift is delivered before Ron lends his badge. Arun is not present during the cup’s unsealed custody interval. The badge therefore cannot explain how its interior was contaminated.

Physical record · Recording desk

Stenographer’s source note

The speakerphone continuously records Ron speaking, but does not record his hands or the earlier gift handling. Voice continuity does not authenticate a sealed object.

Physical record · Hearing room

Cup examination

The pine-crested cup contains the harmful marker. Julian’s blue-ring cup and the common water are clean. Residue lies beneath the drink line, present before the water was poured.

Physical record · Gift-case desk

Gift dedication

Ron’s attached card names Veda and asks her to use the cup at the session. It was prepared before Julian unexpectedly moved seats. The case is personalised for her, not Julian.

Questions to resolve

Who deliberately supplied the contaminated cup?

Who was the intended recipient of that cup?

Who is established as a knowing assistant to that act?

Which sequence fits the physical and seating evidence?

Use the interactive case desk to select your finding and cite the records that support it. The answer is checked there, and your progress stays in your browser.

Build your finding

Compare the records with each account. Work out what the evidence establishes, then separate that finding from anything it does not prove.
